Introduction
When author Katie Christine submitted Impeccable Petunia Part II: The Two Tails to me in exchange for an honest review, I wondered what it might be like to read a book entirely from a chicken's perspective. When I was younger, I read the Warriors series by Erin Hunter, which all take place from the eyes of cats, and I imagined that it might be similar to those books--and, in fact, it was, to my delighted surprise! I absolutely adored this book and all of its charming, witty, humorous triumph. Although it is the second book in the Impeccable Petunia series, I had no problems at all reading it as a standalone.
My Rating: ★★★★★
Synopsis: "As The Two Tails opens, the flock confronts a spiral of death and disappearance. Ensnared by a rapacious raccoon and desperate for a way out, Petunia, the backyard chicken, must throw herself at the mercy of the dark, open road with little more than gumption, a pair of useless wings, and a dubious companion as her guide." Thoughts and Comments
Pros
- The book is captivating from the very first page--I never once felt myself get bored of reading, and even when I was at work or in the shower, I found myself thinking of the little chickens and their adventures in this novel.
- It's clear that the author has a vast knowledge of chicken breeds and behaviors--the book is very well researched and shows the author's passion for the creatures.
- The illustrations in the book, done by Jonathan Edward, are completely charming, and they do a lovely part in helping visualize the scenes and the characters, especially for readers like me that are unknowing of the different appearances of chicken breeds.
- Every character in the novel is amazingly three-dimensional and contributes to the story in their own ways, and I adored learning more about each of them as the novel went on.
- Though simplistic, the writing is delightful and witty and completely captures the charm that the novel radiates. Although the author previously mentioned to me that some others have commented that the book is more geared towards children, I have to say that I disagree with that conclusion--firstly, because the novel is a bit lengthy for a children's book, and secondly because I feel that this novel can truly be enjoyed by people of every age.
- It was a fairly quick read, which I appreciated! The book is perfect if you're looking for something light, refreshing, and carefree, and I believe books like this are much needed from time to time in life to remind us to enjoy the little things--like animals, adventure, and friendship.
- More specific to the plot, the politics of the henhouse, as well as where their species lies socially on the hierarchy with the rest of the cats, dogs, raccoons, rabbits, foxes, and opossums, are incredibly amusing and fun to learn about.
Cons
- The only issue that I found with this novel is that the grammar and syntax is a bit off, but certainly not enough to distract from the rest of the novel. The formatting and cover art are both excellent!
Conclusion
Readers, I was ALL about Impeccable Petunia Part II: The Two Tails! It was one of the most enjoyable reads I've had the pleasure of reviewing in quite a while. That's really the most representative thing I can say about it--it's just a whole lot of fun! It made me want to go out and buy a couple of chickens to raise myself! If you're a fan of Erin Hunter's works, or even if you're just looking to sit back and enjoy a light read, this book should certainly be the next one you crack open! Ms. Christine, thank you for the opportunity to review your work. I absolutely look forward to seeing more from you in the future!
