A Review of "An Inconvenient Romance"

Introduction

I am extremely excited to announce that An Inconvenient Romance by author Chalon Linton has earned the first five-star review in the short history of Bitty Book Nook! Dear readers, this book was, quite honestly, flawless, in my humble opinion. I could not name a single "con" about this book--and believe me, I was actively searching for at least one! But alas, Mrs. Linton has charmed me completely with this pleasantly soft Regency romance.

My Rating: ★★★★

Synopsis: "The countryside of England provided an idyllic backdrop for Charles Brumley's and Leah Hasting's childhood. Neighbors and friends, the pair passed many happy days racing through the rolling hills of Derbyshire. Everything was perfect--until Charles ruined it all and abandoned Leah for university.

Six years later, the former friends are thrust into each other's paths once more. Leah had been looking forward to the ball, an opportunity to further her acquaintance with the handsome Mr. Wilkins--but when she sees Charles' familiar face through the crowd, her traitorous heart leaps.

Charles faces his own struggle: he has loved Leah since he was fifteen years old, yet it seems he is too late--it appears that her affections are otherwise engaged. As the pair tentatively renews their friendship, the spark between them is undeniable.

After so many years apart, Leah endeavors to reconcile her feelings toward her once cherished companion. But when a conniving rival for Charles' attention approaches Leah, the threat is clear: give up her association with Charles or a devastating secret about her family will be revealed. Faced with an impossible decision, Leah must make a choice--the ruin of her family or the ruin of her heart?" (via Goodreads)

Thoughts and Comments

Pros

  • Usually, a book with a POV that jumps from one person to another leaves a bad taste in my mouth, almost like the writer is trying too hard to write multiple stories at once. However, I was very impressed with how well Mrs. Linton pulled off writing the book in both Leah's and Charles' POV. It illustrated their differences and shed light on some parts of the story that seemed very easy to misunderstand without the alternate point of view.
  • The voice fit well with the time of the novel and didn't sound too modern, which I always appreciate in historical fiction
  • The language was simple yet elegant, which made for a very easy read. I would absolutely recommend this as a beach book for those looking to get away!
  • The pacing is comfortable and easy to follow. I never once felt like things were happening too suddenly; or, alternatively, dragging along.
  • The story keeps the reader hooked! I read this book in a day--I started it yesterday, January 29th, and finished it as of 8:00PM today, January 30th. While in class, I felt a constant yearning to grab my Kindle and find out what happened next!
  • There was a lot of subtle foreshadowing strewn across the pages, which I also appreciated.
  • The romance between Charles and Leah made me delightfully frustrated--every time something would almost happen, but then have to be avoided for some reason or another, I would stifle a groan.
  • As a woman of faith, the slight hints of a Christian influence made me smile (such as the notes referencing Scripture and using "the good Lord" as reasoning)

Conclusion

Through the efforts of Mrs. Chalon Linton, An Inconvenient Romance made for quite a charming read indeed! Romance fans should be sure to add this one to their to-read list!

A Review of "Impeccable Petunia Part II: The Two Tails"

Introduction When author Katie Christine submitted Impeccable Petunia Part II: The Two Tails to me in exchange for an honest review, I wondered what it might be like to read a book entirely from a chicken's perspective. When I was younger, I read the Warriors series by Erin Hunter, which all take place from the eyes of cats, and I imagined that it might be similar to those books--and, in fact, it was, to my delighted surprise! I absolutely adored this book and all of its charming, witty, humorous triumph. Although it is the second book in the Impeccable Petunia series, I had no problems at all reading it as a standalone. My Rating:  ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Synopsis: "As The Two Tails opens, the flock confronts a spiral of death and disappearance. Ensnared by a rapacious raccoon and desperate for a way out, Petunia, the backyard chicken, must throw herself at the mercy of the dark, open road with little more than gumption, a pair of useless wings, and a dubious companion as h

A Review of "Tales of a Paperboy"

Introduction As always, let me first put the disclaimer that I received a free .mobi file of Tales of a Paperboy from author Andrew J. Mair in exchange for an honest review. Readers, I am so delighted that this book was the book that marked my return to reviewing. It was a beautifully heartwarming Christmas story that really replenished a "Christmas Spirit" in me that I haven't felt in quite a few years, and I'm so thrilled that I was able to read it so close to the holidays. My Rating:   ★ ★ ★ ★ Synopsis: "Following the death of his mother, fourteen-year-old Daniel Morgan moves from Texas to Utah to live with his grandma and new step-grandfather while his dad pursues a job out of state. Encouraged by his father, Daniel reluctantly starts his first job as a paperboy. Lonely and lost in an unfamiliar environment and with the holiday approaching, Daniel finds comfort and hope in the sound of local church bells.  Through his grandparents and the retired families li

A Review of "In the Now"

Introduction In May of 2019 I reviewed a dystopian YA novel entitled New Wave by author Jennifer Ann Shore (and you can read the review here !), so when she approached me a second time to review one of her adult romance books, I was thrilled! She sent over a Kindle gift version of this standalone novel In the Now in exchange for an honest review, and to be completely honest with you, this was definitely a book I needed in my life right now, especially with everything being so hectic lately!  My Rating:  ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Synopsis: "There's a reason why I haven't been home for ten years. Scratch that. There are many reasons why I haven't been home--family drama, small-town gossip, and my career probably take up the top three spots. But when my career stalls and I get devastating family news, I'm back to the very place I ran away from a decade ago. The last thing I want to do is pick up right where I left off, and as I'm drawn to Noah, my terrifyingly gorgeous high
